The only witness examined was the captain’s close friend in whose house he was shot. The revolver, which was covered with his head and his right hand, belonged to his friend. His own was the bloody knife found next to the victim. The same man found him in his yard, but police and doctor arrived at the site later. Thanasis Lambrou died during his transfer to the Kranidi Medical Center.
The witness reported that with the victim were close friends. He stressed that the captain’s problems with his wife started when he learned that she was cheating onhim. He said the accused was often accused the victim of earning less money than in the past.
Thanasis Lambrou was in the house of the murder almost daily as he had spare key. His wife also had a key to accompany the cleaning lady whenever needed, according to the witness.
He said that a friend of his gave him this gun twenty years ago. He used to hide it in his bedroom in the wardrobe drawer and said that it was always empty of bullets. He claimed that the captain knew about the gun and referred to an incident. One day the couple was in his house, the captain went and took the gun from the bedroom, brought it to the living room and addressed his wife, said,
“Do you see it? One day I will kill you with it…”. Because of this incident the witness assumed that the defendant would know in which room the house was the weapon. The witness also told the court that the victim also had an extra-marital relationship with a colleague at the villa where he was working.
Responding to questions about the day when the captain was found shot in his yard, he said he had seen the victim pass his motorcycle in front of his work and even greeted him. When he went to his house in the afternoon, he saw the victim’s motorcycle. Directing him to the courtyard to feed his dogs, he saw him fallen and bloody. He said he had called a friend on the phone to tell him what was the number of the Health Center, the police and his lawyer. As there was no ambulance available, the doctor arrived at the site a little later with a patrol. In a next relative question from the Chair reported that he himself, because he was under panic, threw the rest of the bullets around his plot.
The trial will continue on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 June.
Altogether, more than twenty witnesses have been summoned to the trial, and so far the father, the victim’s sister, his girlfriend and the policeman in front of whom the accused confessed to the crime have already been examined.
Aggeliki Nikolouli did not testify as planned at the previous meeting.
The journalist, who had been waiting patiently all day long, seemed particularly daunting in her statements about the lawyers of the accused who methodically attempt to stop her examination.
The defense side submitted a request, for the mother, father, and sister of the accused to testify, as well as neighbors of the owner of the house where the crime committed.
The chronicle of the case
On December 8, 2014, Thanasis Lambrou, a 42-year-old father of a juvenile girl, was found deadly hit in a pool of blood in the courtyard of a friend’s house. The revolver with which he was shot belonged to the same friend and owner of the house. The scene of the crime was set to resemble suicide, something the local police authorities did not understand from the beginning and accepted this version with summary procedures. The victim’s sister and his family have never been convinced of the whole scene. The poor cohabitation of the captain with his wife and the extramarital relationships she suspected they had, made them look for the truth in the “Light at the Tunnel”. The on-site research of the show, the presence of the wife in Tunnel and the testimonies of the victim’s friends were highly revealing.
At dawn on Friday, July 24, the widow confessed the murder of her husband, Thanassis Lambrou, in the presence of a public prosecutor, but then took it back, refusing to sign it.
After repeated postponements and tensions with the defendants’ lawyers who turned to even the court seat, the conviction came.
After about four weeks of an adventurous hearing, the captain’s husband was unanimously guilty of manslaughter by intent.
The Court decided to send the copies of the case file to the Prosecutor of Nafplion. After some time, the Nafplion Prosecutor’s Office ordered an investigation into whether or not a third person was involved in the case, which is still being examined.
