Absent the son of the mastermind

With particular interest, the trial for the murder and kidnapping of Marios Papageorgiou continued on Wednesday December 19.

At the Athens Mixed Appeal Court, one of the two sons of the main accused did not appear one more time. For him he was ordered to be present two times before and was not found to testify. The order is still in force and was sent to the Police Department of Nea Smyrni.

The witness, through his attorney, had presented a non-dated certificate stating that he had been promoted to a degree in order to retire because of his inability to serve in a police office or on the street.

First thestified  the head of the Homocide Department, who was in charge of the investigation, at the time. Responding to Senate questions, he described the main accuser  as an unrecognizable, insincere, and pathological liar. When the laywers of the victim’s family read part of the phone conversation in question between the mastermind and its associates, who referred to the “burned”, he pointed out that if he knew about it, he would judge it as a suspect one. He argued that he and his team did not carry out any further research, as the time limits were very tight. From the early days they believed that Marios was not alive because they had not spoken  with him on the phone or had any other life signs. He was convinced that the mastermind knows exactly what happened and where is the body of the unfortunate young man.

Then thestified  the police officer who had the supervision of the preliminary investigation together with the  head of the Homocide Department. He stressed that there was an objective difficulty in making a thorough elaboration of telephone conversations between the mastermind and his associates.

“We did not have time. Imagine that they could abduct  Mrs Varvara, whom I feel like family,” he said.

Responding to the Senate’s questions, he said that he could not explain why the testimony at a preliminary stage from the witness who was recently accused of perjury was not found  as he was then testified to the Attica General Police Headquarters. Referring to the police officers sons of the mastermind, he stressed that  with the evidence they had at the time did not give them the impression of being involved. On the other hand, he can not explain why their testomonies were small and insignificant.

He argued that nothing had leaked from the Police and that absolute secrecy was respected. Referring to the victim’s  troubled mother who was watching, he said:

“Mrs. Varvara, I told you … My belief is that the child is dead and the main accused is directly involved.”

Two more witnesses were present at the court and were summoned by the Seat to testify as judges believe they have played an important role in the case.

These witnesses resulted from the recent testimony of another witness who was recently accused of perjury and referred to a regular trial.

When the first of the two, who, according to the lawyers of the victim’s family, allegedly headed to the “burned” together with another partner of the mastermind, stepped to testify, heresponded in a strong tone that they were heading to Thiva. This is in contradiction with what the witness, who was now accused of perjury, recently filed and claimed that they had  transferred charcoal to Kamena Vourla !

“You can not convince us by raising your tone of voice, and you have not convinced us it so far,” the Head of the court said, and then asked him:

“What else did you transfer?”

In the same style the witness replied: “Nothing else.”

The witness did not complete his testimony due to strike of the court secretariat. The trial will continue on Thursday 10 January.
