“Tunnel” presented the dialogue between the reporter and the alleged “stone of scandal.” She was cold, ironic and combative as characterized she did not know, not heard, not saw … She does not believe that the death of 46 year old teacher was a crime and insists on the version of the accident.

In the “Tunnel” spoke her husband Nikos. He expressed the belief that the motive of the crime was economic, because the victim was the stock market. He stressed that relations between them were very good. “I had him in my heart,” said because of the contact that was developed between his children and students of Nikos.

What said at the “Tunnel” the commander of the Fire Department

In a telephone intervention at “Tunnel” the retired commander of the Fire Service Agrinio at the time, Panos Giannakopoulos, described the picture that he saw when he arrived at the place. As he said the operations center was informed shortly before 12 noon that at the 3rd kilometer of road Agrinio – Karpenisi a car was burning. Immediately the first fire truck left as well as himself arrived there with his own car. Until then there was not been reported that in the burning vehicle was a man. “The smoke of the fire reached a height of 60 -70 meters. It was visible from the city and led me to the point. The fire truck, as well as I arrived about 5 to 10 minutes after the call.

When we arrived the car was completely burnt and high temperatures have been developed which means that the fire had broken out before 40-50 minutes, ” he said. He was he who opened the passenger door and found that in the driver were the remains of a charred body. The driver’s door was 1-2 cm open, but not sure if this was due to high temperatures. It is noteworthy that 50 meters away from the flaming private car, he saw two women watched idly the fire.

The show found key witnesses and what revealed, opened new road in this difficult research five years later. The unlucky man, father of a child, found charred inside his car of Great Thursday, April 21, 2011, at his field in Roupakia Agrinio. The authorities initially spoke of suicide or accident. The family with the help of experts proved murder.

“I saw him pulled in his car ‘

Aggeliki Nikolouli’s request for witnesses during last Friday’s show, had response. Two witnesses contacted us and revealed facts and strange movements near the field where Nikos Mentzos was murdered.

The first witness reported that at Holy Thursday of 2011, shortly before Nikos was murdered, she was passing with her husband in front of the supermarket LIDL. Around 10.30 in the morning, she saw the teacher’s car parked in the rough edge of the road and at the beginning of a dirt road. The driver’s door was open and a man was pulling violently the teacher who was inside, trying to defend himself. Just behind the victim’s vehicle, there was a dark-coloured car with three men who seemed to be with that unknown guy because they were watching the brawl uninvolved. The witness who is a resident of the area, recognized with certainty both Nick and the person who pulled the victim in his car.

The second witness revealed that she was passing through the same point a few minutes earlier. She saw strange movements of two cars and a motorbike, that were driven by familiar persons involved in the case.

“She hid, waited and she attacked”

The teacher’s wife breaks her silence for the first time after five years and reveals to Aggeliki Nikolouli unknown details of the tragedy that struck her family. Vicki Mentzou described everything she experienced at home but also at her work because of the extra –marital relationship of her husband during the last two years before his horrible death. This woman constantly bothered her and demanded her to take a divorce using vulgar characterizations. Just the memory of an edge incident that occurred on New Year’s Day of 2011, brought her agitation. The day before New Year’s Eve, she was forced to remove the phone from the wall outlet and at the first day of the new year she saw the “other” woman at the entrance of her house attacking her husband. “She was hidden somewhere and when Nikos went to get firewood, she rushed over him, she grabbed him and shook him violently.” The tragic wife then asked “what does she want here and bother us” and threatened to call the police. When the “other” woman heard this threat, she disappeared. Vicki Mentzou struggled to keep all this away from her child and keep the balance at home. Nick was telling her that he wanted to stop this relationship because he was psychologically tortured and his purpose was to save his marriage. But the pressure which was exerted by the extra-marital relationship, threats and blackmales, undermine their efforts to save their marriage.

The victim’s widow reveals the scenery of horror

In the second part of her interview, Vicky Mentzou brings up minute by minute what happened that fateful Holy Thursday when she lost her husband forever. A few minutes before the tragedy, the 46 year old teacher had called to tell her that “everything will become ruins”. Was he under threat? Was someone else using his cell phone? On hearing of this phrase, his wife started calling him back, but he never replied. He went to look for him by lying at her boss, claiming the her child was ill. Driving her car, she went at the field, where she thought Nikos would cut grass, but she did not find him. While continuing to call him at his cell phone, she called to his mother in case Nikos went there. Unfortunately, the answer was negative. While she was returning at the city, she called her son asking him if his father returned. Nikos was not there. She continued her route, until she saw from a far distance the fire smoke and rushed to that area. She saw Nikos’ car burning, but from the shock she experienced, she didn’t think of the possibility that there was a man inside. Then, she called her sister and after a few minutes later her sister’s husband came at the field. He phoned the fire appartment. In the next few minutes, she realized that her husband, Nikos was inside the burnt car. Vicki Mentzou was aroused by the testimony of a resident of the area as she was transferred to her by Aggeliki Nikolouli. That testimony claimed that she was staring at the burning car doing nothing. Recalling the memory of all that happened on the day of the tragedy, she told with certainty that nothing in the behavior of her husband testified what would follow. He was afraid that something bad will happen during Easter of 2011. After Nikos’ death, the woman realized that about 100.000 euros were missing from their bank account. Vicki Mentzou “sees” revenge behind the death of her husband. She asks for justice so that her son would get answers for the loss of his father. To find out the truth.

“I believe it was an accident”

The woman who was close to Nikos the last two years before his death, believes that he died as cause of an accident. Talking to our reporter, she expressed the question of her involvement in the case stating that “his wife and family are aware of what happened.” The woman claims that she does not remember ever having seen Nikos agitated or depressed. Her impression is that he was an easygoing man who had no enemies. That’s the reason why she believes that nobody would want to kill him. She was asked about the text message that the victim sent her the morning of his death. Nikos was telling her to “be careful”. She didn’t give a clear explanation about that message. The woman denies that she had gone to Nikos’ house in the New Year Eve of 2011, causing a quarrel.

Another important testimony was given to “Fos Sto Tunnel” which confirms the pressure that Nikos experienced.

Nikos revealed to his close friend that he had an extra-marital relationship. But lately, things seemed to have slipped out of control. There were few times that this woman had financial requirements pushing the victim to the edge. According to the witness, Nikos was threatened. He had even reached at a point that he was afraid even for his child’s safety. So he wanted to stop the extra-marital relationship and give another opportunity to his wedding. The witness, with whom she had frequent contact, remember s that at least twice, Nick felt he had lost all limits. One day, some of those who threatened him, met him on the street asking him persistently to learn something. Then Nick was terrified saying that “this was my end.” During another night, the teacher returned home being upset by the suspicious movements he had seen in the street. When Nikos Mentzos was referring to his wife, he spoke with the best words. He was always saying that he never had any complaints for her. In fact, recently she bought him a beautiful watch as a gift and he was very happy and determined to save his marriage. But he didn’t get this far…

“That morning, the teacher was here”

A testimony that solves one of the many “grey areas” of Nikos Mentzos’ case was broadcast by “Fos Sto Tunnel”. A store receipt that was found outside the burnt car of the victim, didn’t belong to the perpetrator but to the teacher himself. The receipt was from the purchase of some products from a specific hardware store just before 10 am of that day. “Fos Sto Tunnel” contacted the owner of the store, who testified that he did not remember if Nick had passed by his shop that day. His son, however, who was in the store, remembers the teacher probably bying some clamps and other materials for the Easter’s lamb.
