His mother, Despina Koutseggou, and his stepfather, Christos Dios, are sitting in the dock on the accusation of intentionally killing together their son in a calm state of mind.
The investigative journalist, who testified first in court, described in detail the findings of the “Light in the Tunnel” investigation and the image obtained by the journalist from her communication with the defendants from the moment they contacted the “Tunnel” to the point where the body of the unfortunate Kostis was found.
As the journalist told the court from the first moment, she was under the impression that Despina was not expressing concern and pain for her child’s disappearance. During the commercial breaks, she was repeatedly asking Angeliki Nikolouli not to stress the accusations she was hearing from Siatista residents who were phoning and talking about her.
Angeliki Nikolouli also stressed that the accused mother were constantly trying to steer the investigation of the broadcast against Spyros, Kosti’s lifelong friend, whom he had gone to that night.
At the same time, she also blamed her ex-father-in-law for allegedly doing harm to him because Kostis had sold his father’s inheritance to help his mother financially.
But soon Tunnel’s investigation revealed that these accusations were false and that something else had happened to the unfortunate young man, so despite the reluctance of the family, the journalist’s investigation continued with perseverance in the area.
In fact, Kostis’s friend, Spyros, who is also a key witness in the case, told Tunnel at the time that Kostis had left for the night to go home and would certainly not return to him because he was tired and working in the morning, as he was told. He even said that he went to his house the next morning and saw his mother steam clean the kitchen and the carpet.
His testimony about his return home was also confirmed by Kosti’s aunt, speaking at the Tunnel. She said she had heard Costis return half an hour after 11pm that fateful night and she heard no other voices outside the house or a car, as was one of the mother’s many claims.
At this point, Angeliki Nikolouli also referred to the experience from the interview of Kosti’s younger brother, who allegedly taught him what to say, something that a psychologist had also found, from whom the show had been consulted.
Among other things, the journalist was particularly concerned by the mother’s apathy, when she informed her about the finding of her son’s corpse in his stepfather’s estate. She had only responded that it was indeed theirs, while at the same time his stepfather had claimed that he was not aware to whom the land belonged to.
From then on, the two defendants’ communications with the show suddenly stopped, but at the request of Siatista citizens and beyond, Tunnel’s investigation continued.
The blood on the car’s cover
Angeliki Nicolouli’s persistent search resulted in the stepfather’s car, which had already been sold. The show found its new owner in Veria and spoke with him. He had noticed that on the inside of the car’ s cover, there were some blood stains that would not come off, despite constant washing. Wanting to help with the research, he sent the cover to geneticist George Fitsialos.
Dr. Fitsialos found drops of blood, which had been greatly damaged by the washes, but his analysis showed evidence that it was human blood, yet DNA could not be extracted.
The trial was quite intense and the journalist received ongoing inquiries from the defendant’s lawyer, Apostolos Lytras.
Among other things said by the lawyer, after providing a stepfather’s receipt from tolls, was the question of how his criminal activity in Siatista could be explained. In this regard, the journalist emphasized that this is something the Authorities are called upon to answer and explain from their own investigation.
In addition, Mr. Lytras said police officers after finding the corpse went to the family’s home in Siatista and investigated with a special spray if there were traces of blood, but they did not find any. The reporter then pointed out that the family had then moved to Eleusina. Things were missing from the house like the carpet and the house had been washed several times while they were living there, so blood could not be traced.
It was followed by the testimony of Kosti’s lifelong friend, Spyros Kalamboukos, who described Kosti’s relations with his mother and the rest of his family, and was particularly attentive to her apathetic attitude. The trial continues on January 15, 2020, with the testimonies of the hunter, Sarantis Liakas, who found the lifeless body of Kostis Polyzos, in his stepfather’s land and with the testimony of other witnesses.
