Vangelis Salis, 33, a farmer, did not have time to say what happened that afternoon in the warehouse where they found him. His attempt to ask for help was in vain.
The evidence at the place that would “speak” about the tragic event, magically disappeared, since the authorities did not think to collect them.
The unfortunate father of a forty-day-old daughter was found poisoned in his field in the village of Kastela in a small warehouse with a watering motor and other tools.
The locked door “sealed” the guilty secret. The key was thrown away, a few meters away in the grass.
When his worker managed to open it and found him, he could not help him and transport him immediately to the hospital. The key to his 4×4 car, as it turned out, was hidden under the driver’s mat, something he would not use to do.
A container of pesticide was found next to him and everyone believed, even the authorities, that he drank it to commit suicide. Toxicological examination showed that in his stomach along with food, there was another poison, a banned pesticide, “lanate”, which was not found anywhere.
The gaps in the case, the unbelievable omissions of the Authorities, which did not even conduct an autopsy in the warehouse and the contradictory testimonies of witnesses, were revealed in the “Tunnel’s” investigation.
The mother and brother of the unfortunate Vangelis, for more than four years, have been fighting a great battle and managed the case to be characterized as intentional homicide.
It all happened on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. Before, there had been a car accident with Vangelis, as a tractor driver, and a motorcyclist injured.
His wife and mother-in-law testified that this incident upset him and led him to commit suicide. His insurer, in a telephone conversation with the show, claimed the opposite. He stressed that at first he was upset, but then he faced it calmly and was waiting for him in his office to discuss the details.
“I saw her throwing the food in the trash…”
A relative of the victim describes on the camera of “Tunnel” what unfolded shortly after the tragic event.
“I saw her putting the food in a bag. It seemed weird and followed to see what she would do and I saw the food being thrown in the trash.”
What raises questions is that while the victim’s relative was on the witness list, no one called her to testify. She did it herself voluntarily, recently.
The mother: I was cut into fifty pieces…
The tragic mother addressed the “Tunnel”, in an attempt to find the culprits of this dark story and to bring the truth to light.
He talks about a very good and happy child and she cannot believe everything that has happened.
“I rule out the possibility that he has harmed himself. He was experiencing the happiest period of his life. He was giving out candies to everyone for the birth of his daughter. All I ask is to know what happened to my child to justify his memory, nothing else. I have searched everywhere, I have dug all over the earth for this medicine that they say he took, I did not find it anywhere,” said Mrs. Maria at an emotional state.
Brother: Different poisons…
The brother of the unfortunate Vangelis Salis describes from the place where he was found dead, the chronicle of the fatal event.
“His wife called me because she could not find him. I tried too, but in vain. I asked our worker to go look for him. She found him at a very bad state, panicked and called us. On one hand he was holding a croissant and on the other one a coffee. A little further on, a container of pesticide was found. His wife arrived at the spot, but she was waiting in the car, she did not come outside to see him. They transferred him to a hospital in Athens. Shortly after we learned the unpleasant news… The strange thing that raised suspicions is that a different pesticide was found in his body, from the one in the container next to him. The other drug was not found anywhere,” he told Tunnel.
“I found him, but he did not manage to tell me what happened…”
“Tunnel” spoke with the man who worked in the victim’s fields and located him that day dying slowly inside a warehouse.
“His brother called me to look for him and I went to the street and found Vangelis’ car. I thought he would have gone to do something at the warehouse. I saw through the window and I was shocked. He was shaking his legs and arms and vomiting. I tried to open the door to enter, but it was locked. I broke the wire, but it would not open. On the side I found the key with a string. I opened it and screamed “boss, boss”. He grabbed my hand as if he wanted to get up, but I could not help him alone,” said the “key” – witness.
“A little later his wife came and I called her to come and get the boss because he was at a very bad state. She said: “I cannot, I’m afraid.” “She was waiting in the car fifty to a hundred meters away so that she would not see anything and was talking on the phone,” he concluded.
The mother: It was found that he had eaten before…
The mother and brother of the young farmer are looking to find the truth and get the answers they have been asking for so long time.
“My bride and her mother, a few days after the loss of my son, told us that Vangelis had taken a pesticide. He had told his brother that day that he would go home to eat and then leave. His mother-in-law claims that he did not eat, only kissed his wife and left. However, from the necropsy – autopsy it appears that there was food in his stomach”, stressed the tragic mother.
“I was called by the police to go and get the bottle with pesticide and my lawyer acted like crazy because they gave me proof of the crime without any paper that I received it. Police did not take fingerprints from any of the objects at the scene. Toxicological tests showed that the drug found at the site had nothing to do with what was found in his body. Someone brought him here, he did not come alone. All I ask is to find the one who did this evil thing to my brother”, stressed Antonis Salis.
“Incredible mistakes, big gaps…”
Konstantinos Gogos, lawyer for the victim’s mother and brother, reopens the file of this dark story.
“There are omissions and many gaps at the pre-investigation and investigative level. If the family had not fought with such a great struggle, we would not have intentional homicide today, as has been shown in the case file. The victim could not be locked in on his own. Justice has identified contradictory testimonies of witnesses and we ask to be investigated, who is telling the truth and who is lying. An autopsy was never carried out at the place where the victim was found, no fingerprints were taken, nor was the evidence mentioned in the testimonies found,” he said characteristically.
The lawyer talks about a young man with a very good financial situation and does not rule out the possibility that the motive for the murder was the money.
The brother: The car accident that happened before the fatal incident…
The victim’s brother spoke to the “Tunnel” camera about the car accident that happened that day shortly before the fatal incident.
“He had left the field with the tractor to go for oil and on the way back, he crashed with a motorcycle that had developed a high speed. He was very cool with it. None of them suffered any serious injuries and then he went to the Department to give a statement and visited the young man at the hospital. Then we found him dead”, he said characteristically.
Via a skype connection with the show, Socratis Tsantiris, medical examiner and technical advisor of the family, stated that the poison that caused the death, most likely he got it with cooked food.
