The secret of the disappearance of Kostas Fragoulis, 38 years old, was unearthed with a crane from the port of the island.
At noon on Monday, February 13, the captain of the ship “Agios Spyridon” spotted the car at the bottom of the port. The authorities were informed and an alarm was raised.
At a distance of twenty-eight meters from the pier and at a depth of one and a half, the car of Kostas Frangoulis was buried upside down in the mud.
When they recovered it, they found from the chassis number, but also from the wallet with his police ID, that it was the missing person who was looking for the “Tunnel” in 2006.
The bones found were given for examination, but also for official identification through DNA.
The missing man, a former sailor, had bought the blue Alfa Romeo 33, registration number KYB – 4286, three days before he was lost.
On Tuesday 30 May 2006, he left the town of Corfu, where he lived with his mother, saying he was going to work as an oil painter in the village of Karousades. He had 2,000 euros on him.
All these years there was no sign of his life. His relatives cannot believe that he was buried a few meters away from them, in the port of the island.
The captain “saw” the missing person at the bottom…
The Tunnel located and spoke to the professional diver, who recovered the car from the seabed.
“I was informed by the port authority of Corfu that there is probably a car in the sea. In ten minutes we were here. It was more than half buried in the muck upside down. We called a crane and brought in lift balloons so we could retrieve it. You couldn’t see through the windows with a flashlight if there was anything. The next day in the morning, we started the survey again. We found some personal items and human bones, we collected them and gave them to the authorities from the port authority who were here,” he said.
He pointed out that the car could have been in that particular spot for seventeen years, without anyone noticing, as it was not so close to the wharf, but twenty-eight meters away.
“Cleaning and inspection is being done, but with the turbidity of the port, you can be one meter away and not see it. The timing was that the weather was clear and the waters clear, the captain saw the car, informed and that’s how the process started”, he concluded.
November 2006: When his mother was looking for him in the “Tunnel”…
The “Tunnel” had been on the island of the Phaeacians to investigate his mysterious disappearance. His mother, who was looking for him, feared at the time that he had been the victim of a criminal act, as on the day of his disappearance, he brought a large sum of money with him.
“He had gone to a village to find work. He used to be a sailor for many years and thought about going back to ships, but had an accident and couldn’t. Neither the car nor his phone was found. He had two thousand euros with him. He told me that he loved me and that he would take care of me until old age. Investigations were also made to see if he had left the island, but nothing. The strange thing is that he bought the car just three days before it disappeared”, said his mother to the camera of the show.
A family friend of theirs appeared equally worried.
“He took it in one go and that was the damage he did. He bought a car and after a while he disappeared with the rest of the money he had with him.”
In a telephone conversation with the show, the expert, Panagiotis Madias, said that the particular vehicle cannot be at sea for seventeen years, but less.
The experienced expert justified his position, saying:
“The type of vehicle is known for the increased degree of oxidation it experiences in seawater. The fact that the windshield of the vehicle is broken is not justified. Because the windows were found closed, there would be oxygen in the cabin, which would act like a balloon and make the descent slow and smooth to six meters. So the question arises whether there has been a previous traffic accident.”
Mr. Madias raised some questions, which should be answered by the competent authorities, in order to shed light on the circumstances under which the vehicle was found in the water.
Where was the shifter and parking brake? This way it would appear if the vehicle was in motion before it fell into the sea.
Were his lights on? In what position was the switch found? To reveal the time it happened.
Were the keys found in the machine?
What caused the vehicle to hit the sky? Was there rock in the bottom, or was it predated, something that indicates traffic?
Why is the tire missing from one wheel? Was it lost during the download attempt or was it pre-existing?
