“Almost every day, a minor disappears in our country.”

This worrying picture was given by Police Deputy Nikolas Zervakakos, on the occasion of the World Day for Missing Children.

The Deputy Head of the Department of Missing people, presented the official statistics of the Greek Police for the disappearance of minors in our country in 2016 and the first five months of 2017.

At the  Conference organized by “Smile of the Child” at  Zappeion  on Thursday 25 May, the official statistics of the organization were also presented for the period from 01/01/2016 to 30/04/2017.

The organization  also released the data from the European Missing Children Europe report.

The representative of the Hellenic Police  spoke of a phenomenon that must be of great concern to us all, and stressed that the declaration of extinction must be submitted directly due to the criticality of the event.

Organization President Kostas Giannopoulos said:

“The Smile of the Child” is next to each child victim of extinction, always in cooperation with the competent bodies and always with respect to the official search procedures of the Greek Police. He provides his services in order to find the child who disappeared and return to his family safely, without losing valuable time. Today, together, we are proving to be clear that the partnership and the utilization of all forces combined with the know-how and the specialized human resources are a model for the international data and make Greece stand out in Europe “, Mr. Giannopoulos concluded.

The statistics of “The Smile of the Child” for Greece

In 2016 the European Line for Extinct Children 116000 received:

  • 149 phone calls
  • 170 requests for support for searches for missing children

    Of all these

    For the 47 children there was public announcement
    For 9 children was activated Amber Alert Hellas,
    For 12 children mobilized the Research and Rescue and Research Team “Thanasis Makris”
         136 children were found.

    From the above data, note that:

    33 children were refugees and immigrants. (24 children were unaccompanied, 6 were worrying disappearances, one was fleeing and 2 were parental grabs)

In the first four months of 2017, the European Line for Extinct Children 116000 received:

3,052 phone calls.
45 requests to support searches for missing children.

Of all these

For the 5 children there was public announcement
For 6 children was activated Amber Alert Hellas,
For 4 children, the “Thanasis Makris” Research and Rescue Team was mobilized,
The 41 children were found.

From the above data, it should be noted that a child was a migrant refugee who was found.

Official statistics of the Greek Police for missing children

2016

In 2016, the Missing people Division  handled 241 disappearances of minors.
204 children where found. 37  remain missing.
Of the total disappearances, 147 children were girls and 94 boys.
The 140 children disappeared from Attica and 101 from the rest of the country.
198 are Greek  and the rest of other nationalities.
51 children are up to 12 years old and 190 from 13 to 18 years old

2017

From January 1 to May 15, 2017, the  Missing people Division  handled 125 disappearances.
101 children were found.  24 remain missing.
Of the total disappearances, 79 children were girls and 46 boys.
The 71 children disappeared from Attica and 54 from the rest of the country.
91 are Greek children and the rest of other nationalities.
21 children are up to 12 years old and 104 are from 13 to 18 years old
