In prison 21 years later, for the murder of the ballet teacher

The 68-year-old businessman from Almyros Volos was sentenced on April 7, 2023 by the Larissa Joint Court of Criminal Appeals to seven years in prison for the murder of Marianna-Erieta Kotoulis.

The court decided that the unfortunate 70-year-old woman who lived until 2002 in Amaliapoli Almyrou, was murdered by her businessman and “friend”, who was now sent to prison.

The investigation of the journalist Aggeliki Nikoloulis and the show “Light in the Tunnel” had a catalytic role in solving the case. The show’s investigation uncovered a series of suspicious property transfers by the woman with forged powers of attorney in the years after she disappeared.

The defendant had also been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Larissa Mixed Jury Court for premeditated homicide in a calm state of mind. However, he was not imprisoned until the trial of the case at the Court of Appeal.

At his arraignment, the district attorney suggested his guilt. He emphasized that the defendant, while the disappearance of Marianna – Erieta Kontouli had been established, tried to present her as alive, while there was no evidence of such a thing after her disappearance in 2002. The prosecutor considers Marianna – Erieta Kontouli to be dead since that year

The defendant was referred to a trial by the will of the Criminal Court of Volos, which stated, among other things, that: “acting with direct malice and being in a calm state of mind, he killed Ioanna-Maria-Erietta Kontoulis and then diligently hid her body, in an unknown place , in order to cover up his criminal act in this way”.

During the process, the businessman denied the accusations of murder and emphasized that he and the 70-year-old ballet teacher had a professional relationship and had known each other for several years before her disappearance. During his apology, he said “we searched the whole world for Kotouli”, leaving suspicions of an orchestrated attack against him in order to be found guilty.
