The head of the Forensic Service of Athens, Nikos Karakoukis, broke his silence on the show and revealed unknown aspects of the case that shocked the whole of Greece. He gave answers to those who slander him and what he said about the research he carried out with his colleague Nikos Kalogreas is revealing.
During the live broadcast, the medical examiner and expert Ourania Dimakopoulou wanted to intervene. She asked for attention and restraint in what is being said against her, for her turn in the case, stating:
“It is not Dimakopoulou who changes her mind, science gives its opinion which is specific”.
Ourania Dimakopoulou and Grigoris Leon crossed swords on the “air” of the show, as the medical examiner who was invited to the set, spoke against his colleague, without however naming her, emphasizing the fact that before he spoke on the channels about a slow and torturous murder of the children and then, on the part of the defendant’s defense, changed course.
“We must all be very careful,” she emphasized, noting that her expertise and what she has to testify will be heard in court.
Nikos Karakoukis: I am slandered with incredible lies…
Nikos Karakoukis, speaking to “Tunnel”, gave answers to the accusations made against him and Nikos Kalogrias by the legal representative of Roulas Pispirigou, Alexis Kougias.
“I didn’t speak for a year. I have received a brutal slander from Mr. Kouya, who said that I do not have a degree”, Mr. Karakoukis emphasized and announced an appeal to the civil courts.
The experienced forensic pathologist pointed out that he has been performing autopsies for thirty years, with the last fifteen serving the Ministry of Justice as the head of forensic services.
Through the show, Mr. Karakoukis responds to what has been heard lately, which “are comically and scientifically insufficient”, as he emphasizes.
He described the process followed until the two scientists investigated the cases of Malena and Iris, giving an answer to all those who claim that they are “self-appointed”.
According to him, it all started with an order from the Athens Misdemeanor Prosecutor’s Office to the Homicide Department of the GADA, with which it asked two coroners from the Athens Service to investigate the circumstances of the death of the two girls.
“A lot is said and it is false and slanderous about us. They say that we assigned our friend Mr. Eftychiadis to do the histological examination,” says Mr. Karakoukis. He states that they have sent a document to the Department of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Athens to draw up a review of the two incidents.
The only pathologist and EKPA professor who had not primarily dealt with the two cases was Mr. Eftychiadis, according to what the medical examiner told “Tunnel” since the other two available scientists who deal with autopsy materials had initially investigated the same story .
“We did not entrust the investigation to Mr. Eftychiadis. We addressed the Laboratory”, Mr. Karakoukis concluded.
“The evidence that “speaks” for the two children…”
“In addition to the photographic material and the injuries we found in the x-rays, there are elements that will be analyzed in the competent court that hears the case. The coroner is not the one who investigates and arrests the perpetrator. He is a scientist who finds, based on the data he studies, the cause of death,” said Mr. Karakoukis to “Tunnel”.
“Mr. Kougias invokes some scientists. I respect all my colleagues, but what I find is that I don’t say one thing today and another tomorrow. Is it enough for you to have someone tell you that there were pathological causes for the deaths? Pathological causes are a group of causes, we must determine the specific one that caused the death. There is no scientific reason for the deaths. When you have all the evidence you’ve looked for and they tell you about suffocation and you also see hypoxia, what do you say? When toxicologically nothing was found, what can we say? With our investigation with Mr. Kalogrias we found death by suffocation”, he added.
Mr. Karakoukis, referring to the abrasions on the faces of Malena and Iris, without wanting to give further information, as the trial is pending, said that they were done while the children were alive.
Finally, he wanted to give an answer to whoever accuses him.
“We are not technical advisors, we are State coroners. We have neither financial motivation nor any other interest. Did all of us who worked on the case conspire to say it’s a death by suffocation? To condemn people? These things are a shame. Maybe Mr. Kougias thinks he’s going to find the forensic fallacy of the century, I think the evidence that exists doesn’t support that.”
The latest developments in the Patras thriller…
The “Tunnel” presented all the latest developments in the case of Patras, with the three dead brothers. After an episodic apology, the accused was also remanded in custody for the deaths of her two youngest children, Malena and Iris, by a unanimous decision of the Investigator and Prosecutor.
It is the second pre-trial detention in a row since Rula Pispirigou is already in prison on the charge of the intentional homicide of her first-born daughter Georgina. The court is expected to continue on January 31.
There had been a new request to exclude the 35th Investigator from the defense lawyer of the accused Alexis Kouya, for bias against his client. And this request was rejected by the Board of Misdemeanors. The defendant apologized with a one hundred and twenty page memorandum denying what was attributed to her.
Her memoir describes, among other things, the relationship with the father of her children, whom she describes as having violent outbursts against her.
For the three murders according to the indictment, justice alone now has the say. In the mixed jury court of Athens, the first prosecution witness is the father of the children, Manos Daskalakis.
He is expected to receive a barrage of questions. One of them is why while he was aware of his wife’s poor mental state, who had attempted suicide after the Death of Iris, he did not remove Georgina to protect her.
As “Tunnel” had revealed, the little girl had then found refuge in a friend’s house. There her father visited her, not to take her as he had said, but to inform her that he was divorcing her mother.
A few hours later, Georgina would be in “Karamandanio” with her mother. There the child’s adventure would begin, which ended in tragedy.
The heavy indictment facing Roula Pispirigou is based on the findings of medical examiners and professors of toxicology and pathological anatomy submitted to the authorities.
For Georgina’s case, the conclusion of the medical examiner Sotiris Bouzianis indicated as the cause of death ketamine poisoning. The substance was detected in an amount of 6.5 µg/ml in her post-mortem blood sample by the toxicology laboratory of the University of Athens.
For Malena and Irida, the findings submitted to the authorities by the medical examiners Nikos Karakoukis and Nikos Kalogrias appointed by the prosecutor’s authorities, lead to death by suffocation.
The defendant’s defense alleges a discriminatory attitude of the justice officials. He invokes medical examiners – technical advisors of Roula Pispirigou who talk about pathological causes but without specifying them.
