Angeliki Nikolouli traveled to Serres, where four months ago a double murder with victims a father and a son froze public opinion. The journalist was found in the house of the slaughter with the unique witness, the daughter and sister of the victims. Her deep research revealed telltale evidence that will give a new twist in this mysterious case.
On Tuesday evening, July 28, 2015, the 25 year old pharmacist came face to face with the worst nightmare. She found murdered in their own home her father and brother. DimitrisAfeidis 71 year old, a retired pharmacist and his 27 year old son Giorgos, lay dead a short distance from each other in a pool of blood, conceding both over twenty stab wounds. The lethal weapons were not found at the crime scene. At the house there were no traces of burglary. In the bathroom of the ground floor of the maisonette there was a blue towel which was not found. Police detected only one paper that someone had used and now it is at the forensic laboratories. According to his daughter, Dimitris Afeidis when he left at noon from the pharmacy, he had in his pocket a respectable amount of money. This money is not found. A few days after the double murder, someone broke into the warehouses in the cottage of the family located outside Serres.
“We have to make the evidence that were found at the crime scene to talk,” said at the “Tunnel” the geneticist Mr. George Fitsialos. “The study of blood traces and their distribution in the space, can provide information on the number of participants to the event, the directions that followed and finally a picture of what happened.”
An important detail is that the 25 year old victim’s daughter had left a bag in the kitchen with fishbones. That’s because her father used to take them out of the kitchen door for the cats. The fishbones were not found. Possibly the victim after speaking with his daughter on the phone, opened the door to take them outside and from there came the perpetrator.
Who was the unknown young man?
A new important testimony during the broadcast, spoke of an incident that happened about two weeks before the tragic event. A young man in his thirties with brown hair, rang the bell at Afeidis house asking to inform the tenants about the action of an association. He did not hold bag or some brochures. When he had no response left without visiting another house in the neighborhood.
The last phone call before the slaughter…
With memories still fresh nearly four months after the double murder, the daughter and sister of the victims spoke for the first time. She described to Angeliki Nikolouli the difficult she had with her father and brother after the sudden death of her mother.
Life forced her to mature earlier. Fate however had not said its last word. Within an afternoon she lost in the most tragically her family. With clenched heart and trembling voice told the reporter what happened that fateful afternoon on Tuesday, July 28th.
She went from her own apartment on the main flour where her father and her brother were living, to eat. Her father had lain in the living room to rest and her brother she assumed he was in his bedroom. She ate without making a fuss and left for her evening shift at the pharmacy.
Around six in the afternoon she spoke for the last time with her beloved father. He had called her by his mobile phone to the pharmacy.
She foundthem in a pool of blood…
Young Marialena described in gruesome detail to Angeliki Nikolouli the nightmare she experienced that fateful afternoon on Tuesday, July 28th. She was at the pharmacy and as time passed she began to worry because her father did not appear as he used, or responded to her calls.
When it got dark for good she decided to call his girlfriend to learn news about him but got a negative response. She then proposed her to get out and look for him. Initially the two women thought to visit the family cottage that the hope that Dimitris Afeidis had gone there to escape from the unbearable heat of the days. Ultimately they chose to go first at the house at Ionos Dragoumis street.
They arrived around 21.20 p.m. His car was parked outside and from the upper floor only she saw the light of TV shimmered. The young woman took the keys from her own apartment located on the ground floor and climbed the stairs. A large spot of blood had soaked the mat porch. She tried to open fast but something heavy from behind prevented. With difficulty she managed to get inside. The sight was gruesome. Her brother in blood was sprawled on the floor.
She walked to the living room and saw terrified her father bloodied fallen under the kitchen table. She tried to call an ambulance. Her hands trembled. She came out on the balcony calling for help. A neighbor went and took her outside…
Witness: “I heard a horror scream and cries …”
On that fateful afternoon, many people were passing passed in front of the Afeidis house. That’s because at the opposite is the chapel Prodromoudi where that day the priest was reading wishes for children. Due to the intense heat about thirty people came into the church for coolness and many of them remained until 7 pm. From the neighborhood or passers nobody noticed anything except one woman. According to her testimony between ten to six and six o clock she heard from the house a scream as someone was crying. The neighbor did not pay attention because in the past the father and son used to arguing strongly.
The sister of the retired pharmacist and beloved aunt of Giorgos, Ourania Petrisli talked to Angeliki Nikolouli. The big question remains for the relatives. What led to this wrongful death father and son? What relationship have the rumors that circulated last that Afeidis hid at the house a large amount of money?
She described at the journalist how her nephew lately was feeling better psychological after the loss of his mother. As she said, his father urging him to deal with many things to overcome his problem. Giorgos had found refuge in the church and was more socialized while helping his sister to the pharmacy.
“I found the door open, shouting who is it”
During the four years Eleni Papathanasiou was working as housekeeper at Afeidis family, had not understood anything suspicious that could cause this great harm. As she said to Angeliki Nikololouli every morning she used to go to the pharmacy to pick up the key of the house from Dimitris Afeidis and at midday on 3 p.m. she was leaving the key behind the kitchen door and was leaving the house. Once the police informed her about the tragic incident she cannot find peace. She confided to the Journalist something that she did not tell the family, because she did not consider it important at the time. The day before the murder when she went to throw rubbish, she found the door open. She was impressed and constantly had the feeling that someone was around. She was shouting “who is it, who is it” but no one answered or appeared.
The likely route of the offender before the massacre…
Angeliki Nikolouli with a relative of the victims followed step by step the possible route that someone would choose to enter or leave the house without being noticed.
Pharmachist s Dimitris Afeidis house located in a congested road of Serres leading to the main street Exohon. From there, nearby, starts a small road which normally is used by walkers. Someone must know about it. This small road leads to the back of the family house in street Papazoglou. With irrefutable witness the camera of “Tunnel”, the reporter shows how easy it would be for anyone to enter or leave the unguarded back side of the house. The journalist also recorded the points which one could hide in the house. The journalist spoke with neighbors who their houses could see the house of slaughter, but nobody noticed anything suspicious.
