The manslaughter prosecution brought against the victim’s son brought upheaval on the island and upset his family.
Although the charge against him is serious, no arrest warrant was issued by the Investigator and he is free. The unprecedented development for such a heinous crime, caused a storm of reactions in legal circles, which point out the dangers involved in a closed society, such a decision.
The same man who was looking for his father’s killer in the “Tunnel” for months, informed the show about the developments, even sending the relevant court document, by which he is prohibited from leaving the country.
Speaking on the show, he denied the accusations, referring to a “fraud” that has been set up against him.
According to the indictment, he allegedly “studied, planned and executed in a calm state of mind by strangulation and with financial motivation, his father. He then attempted to cover up his action in various ways, wearing gloves, staging a robbery, and pretending to third parties that he was talking to his father, when he was already dead. It is alleged that he then tried to manipulate the witnesses who were listening to him, so that they would change their statements because they incriminated him.”
“I forgot to tell Security four little things…”
Vangelis spoke to “Tunnel” even after his long-hour police questioning.
“Coming from the old city to my mother’s house, I suddenly saw two cars from which six people got out. They came and asked me to follow them to give a statement for five to ten minutes and then leave. Those five to ten minutes turned into twenty-four hours and I got out around 10:30 the next morning,” said the victim’s son.
“I had simply neglected to tell them some things, such as the message from the witness that Mrs. Nikoloulis has mentioned in her show, and I immediately admitted that I had sent it. It was stupid of me not to tell the police. They said that I ran into too many contradictions, I just forgot to tell them two or three little things.”
He told “Tunnel” that when he was presented with the evidence from the forensic laboratories, he explained the blood stains found on his bag as follows:
“When I walked into my father’s house on June 14, my first move was to take out my duffel bag and put it on the freezer. There they say that there was a towel with blood on it and that I grabbed it and put it on top of my bag. These bloodstains are from my injury in the garbage trucks because we have some injuries. They even blame me for this…” (The blood belongs to his father.)
Continuing the same line, he told the reporter of the show:
“I just forgot to tell them some little things, I didn’t do anything on purpose to hide facts. It’s not my fault the cameras didn’t catch me the day before he was found dead. After all, I don’t trust the recorders. I forgot to tell them that I had spent three hours with him the day before. It was remiss of me not to tell them I was at his house that day.”
However, the defendant contradicted himself while telling the reporter all this.
While at the beginning of the phone call he stated that the day before his father was found dead, he had gone to his house around 12:00 noon for ten to fifteen minutes, then and after the insistence of the journalist, he admitted that he went around 15 :00 and for about three hours!
“I am very shocked and my psychological state is very bad. Not that I’m scared, it’s just the psychological warfare I got in there again.”
When Vangelis came to the “Tunnel” to see the light in his father’s murder…
It is not the first time that a defendant addresses Angeliki Nikolouli to shed “light” on the brutal murder of his relative. However, the story of the man, who is accused of murdering his own father in a brutal and torturous manner, has shocked the whole of Greece. The tangle of the murder of 75-year-old Giorgos Karyotis in the Medieval city of Rhodes began to unfold in the first show of “Tunnel” for this season, on October 14, 2022.
The victim’s son, Vangelis, was in the studio to appeal for the man who killed his father to be identified. During the live broadcast, the call center was bombarded with information and evidence targeting the accused, without all of it being made public.
Both in the first show, and in the two live links from the island of Knights, Angeliki Nikolouli and the special guests who were in the studio, asked the alleged perpetrator specific questions. But he himself seemed to be confused and unable to give convincing answers.
“Anyone who knows something and doesn’t want to go to Security, get anonymous on your show so we can catch my father’s killer,” he said in an appeal. He denied any involvement in his murder:
“I was targeted, but I had no differences with my father. Neither financially, nor hereditary.”
The testimonies in the “Tunnel”…
The presenter, describing to the alleged perpetrator how his father was found dead, pointed out the rope that was tied around his neck. He claimed that it belonged to his father and was in the warehouse next to the house, something he had not reported to the authorities!
Crucial to the development of the case was the presentation of an important testimony in the “Tunnel”.
“It was between three and four in the morning that I probably saw the perpetrator entering or leaving the house of Giorgos Karyotis, closing the door. He was carrying a bag and wearing work clothes. Then I received a message from an unknown number asking me to meet and talk without anyone knowing. I did not give a basis and did not answer. He sent me again that it is important to “tell me what you saw without anyone knowing,” said the witness.
When the specific testimony was heard, the victim’s son wanted to intervene and give answers that “froze” those present in the broadcast studio.
“Angeliki, I sent the message because I wanted to know what he saw. We were the whole family together and I sent it. I doubt the Police know. I will testify to this”, replied the defendant and continued to launch accusations against a man who allegedly had an argument with Giorgos Karyotis, before he was found dead.
One week later, on the show of Friday, October 21, 2022, the journalist of the show, Nikos Kontorousis, was again in Rhodes. During the night, Angeliki Nikolouli received a message and asked to be connected to Rhodes immediately.
“Before you went to your father’s house and found him dead, did you call him?”, asked the journalist and presenter, with the defendant categorically denying it. Now, he allegedly called in the presence of his colleagues and addressed his father, who, according to the coroner, was murdered at the time. The phone call was misleading.
On Friday, November 25, “Tunel” broadcasted a new show about the brutal murder of the bio wrestler from Rhodes. The journalist of “Demokratiki”, Mary Foti, was on a live connection and the alleged parricide appealed to the Minister of Citizen Protection, in order to intervene and for the DNA results that would “show” the murderer to be released immediately.
“Christmas is coming and I won’t have my father,” said the son, who is now accused of his murder.
When Vangelis was asking “Tunel” to catch the murderer…
The alleged perpetrator and patricide, in addition to his live presence during the show, called the “Tunnel” very often to express his displeasure that his father’s killer had not yet been caught. He blamed the Security for wasting time and reported attacks on his family.
“My mother and my sister are in a bad psychological state. As long as the killer is out there, we are afraid and lock ourselves in the house”, emphasized the alleged perpetrator and described the strange incident that happened to his brother, who moved into their father’s house, a few days after his brutal murder:
“They were trying to kick the door and get in. Fortunately, they didn’t succeed, because we would have mourned my brother as well”, said the defendant and estimated that they were the ones who killed his father.
The answers he gave through the show to those who accused him were also characteristic.
“Does anyone ask me how I feel about being accused and being accused? And in the neighborhood they accuse me of killing him together with my brother in order to take his house. I am here and I am not hiding from anyone. I have nothing to fear,” said the defendant.
“An easy case like my father’s takes seven months. We will not allow this case to go to file. Why don’t they tell us if they found anything? Do they only know how to say nonsense? I doubt if the Police did their job well”, said the accused, launching an attack on the Rhodes Police.
He also emphasized that his father’s killer must be punished, while ruling out the possibility that the perpetrator came from their family.
“I’m sitting at his house, in case the person who killed him makes the mistake of entering. If someone comes in at night, I wash my hands. Since the Police are not around, I will do it myself. Anyone who wants to come”, warned the accused in the communication he had with the journalist of the show before the stormy developments.
“They’re blaming the wrong person…”
His sister is sure of his innocence and what she is asking is to find the real culprit.
“Psychologically, we are in bad shape, especially Vangelis who is said to have killed his father, which is not the case! I know my brother very well. Our mother is in a bad psychological state. They accuse him unfairly. They are dealing with the wrong person. My brother is not a murderer. The killer is walking free,” he stressed.
“I’m going to be a fratricide…”
The brother of the accused, Vangelis, takes a tougher stance and declares that if the charges are proven, he is determined to “take matters into his own hands”.
“I’ll kill him like this and he’s done it, he won’t get to go to jail. He a parricide, I a fratricide. I want the truth to come out. I went today and saw him and he left with the motorbike”, said Odysseus.
