At the hearing on Tuesday, November 12, the President, citing health concerns, stated that he was unable to continue, with the result that the trial was suspended. This means that the trial at the Athens Joint Circuit Court of Appeals will begin from scratch and all witnesses, including those who have already testified, will be examined.
According to reports, the unfortunate brother of Vasilis Kokkinis, in his testimony revealed that he has personal notes of the victim, listing all the problems he had in his life with the accused. However, he reportedly refused to deliver them to the Court.
For this horrible crime that froze the public opinion, the victim’s ex-wife who was first convicted of life imprisonment for his murder, is sitting in the dock. A young man, who appears to have transported the freezer to the apartment, was sentenced to three years in prison suspended for assisting a criminal.
A 23-year-old ex-wife’s friend has also been indicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison for the crime of simple complicity in homicide. At the request of the defense counsel, and despite the advice of the public prosecutor, she was released on restrictive terms until the case is heard.
The trial will continue on February 21, 2020, where the minor’s son, who acquired the victim with the defendant, will also testify at the request of the defense.
The unprecedented crime had taken place in January 2015 and the corpse of the 63-year-old Vasilis Kokkinis was discovered a year later in the freezer of his ex-wife’s apartment in Kallithea. She and her child had fled to Bulgaria where she was arrested by the country’s authorities.
